Not to get rude or anything, but is this just slave mentallity all over again?read this?

Today at school, this black (hatian) girl in my class came up to me and started to make fun of the fact that im african and have nappy hair. i was born here but my father is an immigrant from nigeria but anyways,ya, she was making jokes about my hair saying that "my african ways are really showing now". I was like "thank you very much.". i don't know, uh, do black girls with perms think that they are white or something? does she know that when her perm grows out, she is left with the nappy hair God blessed us with also? well this kind of thing happens all of the time to me(especially because my last name is african and not "Clark" like her's is)

it just makes me sick how black people are ashamed of their own heritage. i forgot to mention that the other kids in the class found her extremly humorous. They were laughing at themselves basically! I love my heritage because noone else will. So, is this just the effects of slavery: that we hate ourselves like this?

It is the effects of slavery why black people act like that. But if i were you i would've reminded her that Hatian people do not have it good in America. And her she got some nappy *** hair too. I don't know where u live but Hatian people do NOT have it good down here in Florida. Especially south florida where i live. Black people constantly make fun of hatians. They're just stupid. I blame their parents. (not hatians but the people makin fun of you.)

Get used to it already. Ignorance is everywhere. At least, I commend you for having your own thoughts! =)

I don't think it's slavery, but just a longing for superiority. It's funny how the people who want to be "better" the most are the ones who never become "better". Ignore that *********.

I have no authority on the slavery issue being white, or anything being black--but that is just plain rude and ignorant of her. Remind her that on average, nobody can tell what country she is from, (just like whites) so she needs to get over herself. Sounds to me like she may be a little jealous of you. I know this may sound ridiculous to you...but why bother with someone you dislike? I don't think she is ashamed of her own heritage, but for some dumb reason--she thinks it's necessary to separate herself from African Americans. Again, most people can't tell the difference. Just like you can't tell where a white person is from. (most of the time) Just be proud like you always have....and do not let her get to you. Just look at her like she's lost her mind and snub her. This behavior is going to get her butt kicked by someone not so refined as yourself. It's just a matter of time...

Nope. Your Hatian classmate appears to be a jerk. There are jerks of all sizes, sexes, colors. Being a jerk isn't a racial thing, nor is it a product of slavery.

awww..don't listen to her...she is just immature...she makes fun of herself cuz her problem is she wanted to be born white...she is stupid... I think black people are much cooler...they have way more then white people...anyways we are all the same...we are humans...tell her she is a loser that doesn't even appreciate her heritage...and tell her she is not white...so she'll stop pretending she is...and maybe someday she'll notice (but I doubt it with the brain she has) how awesome black people are=]

Wow. Every african american or haitian or black student there that was laughing at you was ignorant of their own heritage. You are so right, and you sound to be wise beyond your years.

But the sad fact is that african american (especially women) have completely lost touch with the natural ways of their hair. I bet most of those students there don't even remember what their natural hair felt like, it's probably been at least a decade since they've even seen it. Many of us (myself included) have it pounded into our heads that we need/should have straight hair, starting at the ages anywhere between 4 and 6 (sometimes even younger) with that very first press and curl.

I would not be surprised if they don't even realize or don't even know that their own hair would probably look something like yours if they stopped messing with it, and found themselves beautiful enough to flaunt it natural.

I admire your courage to do that natural thang. Keep doing what you are doing, and PLEASE don't let them get you down. Your hair his beautiful, it is each and every one of them that was wrong.

I would even encourage you that the next time the opportunity to educate them comes along (maybe if you get to do a report or something and choose the subject) check out some books from the library and do some internet research to find why African Americans treat their hairs the way they do and educate the h*ll out of them.

Kids are mean and think it is ok to use teasing to make themselves feel better about their own insecurities. By "kids" I mean anyone who has not learned that they are a good person on their own merits, without resorting to belittling other people. This has nothing to do with color or heritage. You sound like a wonderful person well on the way to having a great life, don't let the "kids" get you down.

You're right. Love your heritage because noone else will.

I'm right there with ya!

I would say it could be because of slavery, but it could also be due to just hearing negative stereotypes all the time. You know how it goes, if you hear something over and over again, you start to think that way. Maybe that could be it. I hope not though.

Growing up in a Black household, I often heard things about my semi-dark caramel complexion. Negative things. It hurt, and I can still remember those things to this day, but I'm an adult now and nobody's opinion matters but my own.

... hold ya head up and don't let people get you down!
