Any suggestions about what I can do to cut my fussy 2.5 YO hair?

He absolutely detests anything related to cutting his hair. His hair is a mess and totally ridiculous looking and I try to cut it all the time. With scissors, my bikini clippers (only reason I bought it was cuz it's perfect size for his head). He hates the pulling feeling of his hair when I am using the scissors and no matter what I use he pulls away aggressively and tries to grab whatever instrument I am using. His hair looks nappy and just yucky, but I don't know what else I can do. Not an option to bring him to a pro cuz he won't sit still long enough to do anything let alone cut his hair.

Hi.

I have the same issues with my 2 year old so it must be a 2 year old thing to do!

My son is hysterical when it comes to his hair, the worst reaction is when I try to wash it. He hates haircuts but they have to be done so I do take him to a hairdresser. The first one we went to only twice as I wasn't real happy with it, he moved around so much they could barely get to him and he looked like such a nerd afterwards! The one I tried recently though was so much better - they had those DVD players too, which he wasn't really interested in but it seemed to calm him down a little. I had to help by holding his head as he thrashed around a lot but in the end we got a really nice haircut.

I think this is just one of those things, you either force them into it or you let it go if it's not worth it. I make him sit to have his hair cut (with force) and hold his head and brush his teeth while he is in the bath tub at night - I only get the brush in there for a few seconds but that is better than nothing.

Good luck!

Go to a pro who specializes in kids - someplace like "Cookie Cutters" haircuts. They have TVs and the kid picks out a DVD to watch. They sit on a special seat like a race car, batmobile, carosel horse, tractor, etc. They get a balloon and and sucker when they are done.

Try one of those "Tooth Tunes" toothbrushes that will play music for him while he brushes.

(ETA - You can't hear the music for the Tooth Tunes unless you put the toothbrush IN your mouth.)

For my son on these two things:

I no longer brush or cut his hair. We dredlocked it. Seriously. And because he never watches movies, we let him watch one as a treat while we twist it up. We also give him the freedom to "take a break" when he needs one, but he must ask first, not just hop up. Maybe those tactics can work for the hair cutting!

For the teethbrushing, he has a blinking lights toothbrush and we take turns. Mama's turn first, then his. That way I know he's gotten it done right, but he still has control over himself too. (And that's what all 2-yr-olds want, right?!)

Good luck!

WOW and i thought i was the only mom dealing with a 2 year old like that! What finally worked for me was bribery. My daughter loves chocolate suckers. The only way i can get her to hold still for a hair cut is to give her a sucker and turn on her favorite cartoon.

With the tooth brushing thing, try a character toothbrush, my daughter has a Dora and a Cinderella toothbrush that she uses. First she brushes her teeth then i do to make sure she got it all. I allow her to pick out what toothbrush and what toothpaste she uses. Try to give him a choice in the matter and he may cooperate! Good Luck!
