Why are many people offended by the terms "kinky" and "nappy"?

Yes, I asked this question before. But it was deleted, so I'm asking it again.

I realize that some people use these words in an offensive manner. But they are used by many others in a NON-OFFENSIVE manner.

In reference to hair, they simply mean "small, tight curls".

Sorry, but I'm not going to say "small, tight curls" in an effort to avoid offending people.

When I asked this question before, users responded by saying that people should say "natural," "afrocentric," and other such terms. Why? Many of the terms that people have suggested to me could apply to anyone (not just people with "small, tight curls"), or they might not even apply to people with "small, tight curls". Why should I use terms that may or may not apply as opposed to terms which I know for a fact DO apply?

I'm honestly just trying to understand why people are so touchy about these words (kinky and nappy). Seems ridiculous to me.

What are your thoughts?

Why are many people offended by the terms "kinky" and "nappy"?

I agree with the person above. I'm also happy and nappy. And I don't see a problem with that term or the term kinky. It's just a whole lot of politically correct ridiculousness that should have no place in a free society.

Why are many people offended by the terms "kinky" and "nappy"?

Doesn't make sense to me either. I say what I mean and mean what I say and I'm not going to tip toe around anyone for the sake of being politically correct.

Why are many people offended by the terms "kinky" and "nappy"?

It's just people wanting to dictate what they want specific groups to say or not say due to insecurity. Anyone with nappy (kinky) hair who is truly comfortable with his or her self would not be bothered. That's how I am. I'm happy and nappy and lovin' it.

Why are many people offended by the terms "kinky" and "nappy"?

I'm with you girlfriend. I've never been offended by either of those words unless I knew for a fact that the person who said them intended to be offensive. I accept both words as proper descriptions of my hair. I'm sorry to hear that your other question was deleted. That's silly.

Why are many people offended by the terms "kinky" and "nappy"?

I'm not offended by kinky or nappy, but nappy was a negative word used toward the slaves to describe their hair. Some black people don't describe black hair as nappy, maybe kinky, but not nappy (its a derogatory word).

Why are many people offended by the terms "kinky" and "nappy"?

Well because nappy sounds bad, kinky I don't know about that one...

But nappy- that girl has nappy hair! thats rude.

Just like- that white girl has a flat ***.

Its an insult. Kinky isnt though so I don't understand that.

Why are many people offended by the terms "kinky" and "nappy"?

I guess I can see how someone would be offended because back in the day, black ethnic hair was called "nappy" or "kinky" in an offensive manner by white people.

Personally, I wish I had naturally kinky hair and, currently, my hair is pretty nappy cuz I haven't showered since yesterday. hahaha

Why are many people offended by the terms "kinky" and "nappy"?

I'm not offended, However when does the conversation of kinky, or nappy come up in everyday conversation. In other words why do you care so much that you have to keep asking the same question over and over.?
