Why is Black people's hair described in negative ways, such as coarse and kinky? I see nothing wrong with describing black hair as "coarse" or "kinky." I would consider myself to have kinky hair. My mother is Black American, and I envy her her hair. It is like you describe, except I would not say coarse, I would only say it looks coarse. It truly feels soft. I like it. Anyway, my mother has curls that are tightly wound, and she can simply wash and do nothing else, and it will look beautiful! Meanwhile, my hair will tangle and frizz up if I try the same.
I have noticed though, at least in California, that many black women do not wear their hair like they were born. My mother, and many other women, have explained that some women feel as though it is too difficult to up-keep. I cannot speak of that seeing as I only have my mother as proof, but she seems to have no problems at all. In fact, I will say it is much worse to comb through my hair, then hers. I am glad you wear your hair out, I would bet that you are beautiful too. I have noticed those that wear the hair out, are much more confident and uncaring of what others think, and that makes me take notice of them and think they have much inner beauty.

Many of the young ladies who work in our office wear stylish wigs to cover their hair.I suppose it is part of their genetic makeup.

We have turned that around in the past years. Have you seen the other races spending gazillions of dollars for fake butts, lips plumper's and wild hair styles, the very things that used to be taboo to us are now on the runways of Milan, New York, Italy.
We have them naturally. Shame is no longer in our vocabulary when it comes to what makes us beautiful, BTW our hair is coarse, nappy, and curly. but it is that that makes us who we are, it is only a negative if we think it is.

But mom would say her hair was as coarse as a horse. I never believed that to be true until I bought a horse, and she was right.
But she could do almost anything, because her hair would hold curl, it didn't fall out when she colored it, her hair didn't suffer from so many split ends like mine does.
and I I had half the hair on my head that she had on hers, I wouldn't mind it being so thin.
So if you have beautiful hair, enjoy it...the rest of us wish we had some of it.

It's also naturally curly, and tends to frizz out, and kink up. It's a valid description, because that's how it is.
I'm not ashamed of it, but I don't necessarily enjoy taking care of it either. I'm always trying to smooth it out. I've had "bad hair" all my life. My sister had "Clairol" hair. Perfectly straight, soft, shiny hair.
By the way, I'm white. Just making the point that it isn't just black people's hair that gets described this way. It's anyone's hair that isn't easily manageable.

I used to fight my hair being curly, kinky and very, very thick so I understand the desire to want to change it (is there anyone woman out there who doesn't wish her hair was different?). How many times have we stood in front of the mirror saying, "I hate my hair"?
But I've learned to embrace mine and now I love it. I wish everyone woman would do the same. Having thick curly hair sets me apart from other women who all have the same boring flattened straight hair.
I think it's only a negative if you let it be. If you don't want someone to refer to your hair as kinky or coarse, tell them so and use another more positive way to describe it.

Maybe i'm wrong but i've only had issues with other black girls making nasty comments about other black girl's hair. In all honesty I have very very very thick, straight out of africa hair, the kind where you can't comb through it without breaking the comb, it's by no means "kinky or nappy" in fact it's curly but many girls out of jealousy because i have "good hair" will make comments about how nappy my hair is and ive even had the experience of being sabotaged ie being told to use a certain product that breaks your hair . I think it's like the light skinned/dark skinned black complex thing. you know how some light people have the tendency to think they are better than dark skinned people and certain dark skinned people are envious of light people and make nasty comments. People who have straight silky hair more closely resembles the texture and shine of white, indian, and hispanic hair which is all more desirable right. Basically i don't necessarily believe it's an impression that society has of black people but rather an issue black people have with themselves. If you look at trends though more recently natural hair, full figures, and thicker lips have all entered the rank of attractive features. in the beauty world coarse hair is not a good thing so i can understand why this is insulting, it's not just black people. coarse hair means it's damaged either because it's too porous or resistant. Coarse is hair basically very hard to manage, people assume that if you hair is not straight or long that it's kinky, coarse, or nappy. it depends on the context it's used in but kinky hair or nappy hair doesn't have to be a negative description.

I do not like the terms "kinky" or "nappy" when refering to my hair. I prefer the term "afro-textured" or natural. I think that we have been raised either by our close relatives or society to think of our natural hair as ugly, bad, or dirty. I personally think that our hair is beautiful and being liberated enough to wear our hair natural is a wonderful thing.
